How LeadersUp is Championing Change and Building a More Equitable Community

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Earlier this year, Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity hosted a re-launch of the LA County Fair Chance Hiring Initiative. This initiative aims to create a more inclusive and equitable workforce by promoting fair chance employment opportunities and reducing barriers for system-impacted individuals. With a renewed commitment to providing second chances and empowering change, LeadersUp in partnership with Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and LA County’s Department of Economic Opportunity invites local employers to join the initiative and become pledged LA County Fair Chance Hiring Employers.

“I am proud to join the Department of Economic Opportunity in launching this initiative that provides mutual benefits for businesses and residents impacted by our justice system to succeed. We have a dedicated and motivated workforce ready to meet the moment in this tight labor market, and we are urging businesses to stand with us in creating thriving communities by providing economic opportunity to local and qualified residents.”

Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell

In this blog, I discuss and explore the significance of the re-launch of this Initiative and the call to action for employers to participate:

Building an Inclusive Workforce. The re-launch of the Fair Chance Hiring Initiative signifies a renewed focus on building an inclusive and diverse workforce across LA County. By embracing fair chance employment, local employers have the opportunity to tap into a pool of talented individuals who are motivated and “ready to work”. These individuals bring unique perspectives, resilience, and a strong desire to succeed, making them valuable assets to any organization.

Reducing Barriers and Promoting Equitable Economic Opportunity. The re-launch of the initiative underscores the County's commitment to reducing barriers and promoting economic opportunity for individuals with criminal histories. By offering fair chance opportunities, employers become catalysts for change, giving individuals a chance to improve their lives and decrease the likelihood of recidivism through gainful employment. This commitment to promoting equitable economic opportunity aligns with the county's vision of creating a more just and equitable society.

Benefits of Fair Chance Hiring. Becoming a pledged Fair Chance Hiring Employer not only demonstrates social responsibility but also brings significant benefits to local businesses. Fair chance employees often exhibit higher levels of loyalty and dedication, resulting in increased productivity and reduced turnover rates. The diverse perspectives and experiences they bring to the workplace foster innovation, creativity, and problem-solving capabilities. Moreover, fair chance hiring enhances a business's public image, showcasing employers commitment to equal opportunity and social justice.

Are you ready to make a lasting impact across LA County? If the answer is yes, join the LA County Fair Chance Hiring Initiative today and become a pledged Fair Chance Hiring Employer. By taking the pledge, you commit to providing “ready to work” job-seekers a fair chance at meaningful employment, contributing to their economic growth and the overall well-being of our community.

Visit our Fair Chance Hiring Resource page to learn more about the initiative and take the pledge today. Together, let's bridge the divide and build a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous LA County!
